Habe mir diesen Band von Kurzgeschichten aufgrund der euphorischen Reviews gekauft, die fast so tun als wäre dies das beste, großartigste und eigentlich einzige Buch der letzten 20 Jahre in der SF-Abteilung.So großartig fand ich es ehrlich gesagt nicht, aber auch bei Weitem nicht schlecht. Nur werden die Erwartungen dann doch etwas zu hoch geschraubt für meinen Geschmack. Was das Buch bzw. den Author auszeichnet ist die solide wissenschaftlich-rationale Basis für die Geschichten. Also kurz gesagt: ein Nerd, der für Nerds schreibt. Man merkt, dass er sich mit den Themengebieten nicht nur literarisch, sondern auch fachlich auseinandergesetzt hat (zB. "The Lifecycle of Software Objects"). Hier geht's aber nicht um abstruse Antriebe und Waffensysteme, sondern um ganz grundsätzliche Fragen des Lebens: Was ist die Zeit? Was ist Bewusstsein? Was ist das Leben? Haben wir einen freien Willen? Was ist eine freie Entscheidung und was wäre, hätten wir sie anders getroffen? Was ist Wahrheit?Jeder hat sich schon mit diesen Themen beschäftigt, manche beschäftigen uns täglich (vor allem die der Entscheidungen...), andere nur selten, dann aber umso heftiger. Chiang lotet diese abstrakten Themen gekonnt und unterhaltsam aus, und macht sie greifbar und alltagsrelevant.Soweit muss ich 5 Sterne vergeben, aber einen muss ich leider aberkennen, und zwar aus folgendem Grund: zwei Geschichten widmen sich u.a. der Frage nach der Natur von Bewusstsein, "Exhalation", wo die mechanisch betriebenen Lebewesen über ihr Universum und ihr Leben nachdenken, und "Lifecycle of Software Objects", wo AI-basierte Wesen in enger Beziehung zu Menschen leben und sich ihrer Gefühle und auch ihrer Lebenssituation im klaren sind und auch aktiv daran etwas ändern wollen. Beide Geschichten lassen allerdings die Crux an der Sache ziemlich links liegen, die darin liegt, dass es eben nicht reicht, äußerliche Verhaltensmuster exakt zu simulieren, um plötzlich auf "magische" Weise bewusste Wesen zu erhalten. Das ist aber eine wichtige Basis für diese Geschichten, für "Lifecycle" noch mehr als für "Exhalation", aber wären die Wesen in diesen Geschichten nur diese rein physisch erklärbaren "Verhaltensautomaten", dann würden sie ihren Reiz einbüßen, und in "Lifecycle" wäre auch eine tragende Prämisse verschwunden, nämlich die Frage der Ethik (und des Mitgefühls) im Umgang mit solchen AI-Wesen. Wären das einfach nur die Software-Spielzeuge, die sie eben sind, egal wie "lebendig" sie nach außen hin wirken, würde sich die Illusion ihrer Bewusstheit bald erübrigen (spätestens beim ersten ernsthaften Bug), und damit auch die treibende Kraft hinter der ganzen Geschichte. Hier liefert der Author keine schlüssige Erklärung, weder aus anerkannten wissenschaftlichen Tatsachen heraus, noch aus alternativen Überlegungen. Für mich die einzige Schwäche in einem ansonsten sehr durchdachten Konglomerat an Geschichten, die ihren Kernideen bis in die letzte Konsequenz nachgehen und sichtbar machen, was Technik bzw. "Was-wäre-wenn"-Technik für unser Leben bedeuten würde.
